Either something is wrong with your installation or you don't have an ajax-enabled site. Did you create the site using the ajax-enabled web site template?
It sounds like you are missing some info in your web.config, below is a web.config that is a web application with srcipt services, compare with yours to find what you are missing.

The web.config file differences appear in two places.
1. Mine has a <system.web.extensions> section that doesn't appear in the web.config you posted.
2. Several of the "compilation assemblies" in your web.config do not appear in mine. These are the ones listed below:

I tried adding these to my web.config but I still get the same problem.
By the way, when I first added the [ScriptService] attribute t the web service, it didn't understand that either.
I tried adding a "using" statement for System.Web.Script.Services and it couldn't find that.
Only after I manually added a reference to System.Web.Extensions.dll was I able to add the "using" statement and the [ScriptService] attribute.
I'm reasonably sure that I started with the AJAX-enabled website template, but I just tried creating another one from scratch using that template. (First, I reran the AJAX extensions installer and used the "repair" option.)
The web.config file for the new, blank AJAX-enabled website includes only one compilation assembly, which is the "System.Web.Extensions" assembly.
Maybe I need to add references to some other dlls?

The release date is 3/2/2007. Is there a newer version? If so, where can I download it?
I have never installed any of the previous versions of the AJAX extensions.
(I do have NetAdvantage 2007 vol 2 from Infragistics installed -- and an evaluation version of DXperience 2007 vol 2 from Developer Express.)
